TOEFL score: from 420 points to 660 points. TOEIC score: 990 points.
I was 19 years old when the time to leave my country came.
For a college student like me, it was the start of the second chapter of my life.
The destination was America.
In spite of having studied English from elementary school to junior year in college, I could not speak, read or write.
The requirement to enter college in America was to score over 500 points in the TOEFL exam.
You can guess, my 14 years of English studies turned into a score below 500 points.
I was shocked and felt into despair.
“What should I do?” I wondered myself.
I had lots of problems with the listening section of the TOEFL.
“They talk so fast!” “I don’t know where the words start or end!” “Did the conversation finish already?”
Everyday life was difficult too.
Lots of misunderstandings, lots of stress.
It did not matter how many textbooks I read or tapes I heard, the results were not very good.
One day while studying at the library, I saw lots of senior citizens borrowing audio tapes.
While thinking... “If I only understood English I could do the same...”, I then suddenly got a hint on how to improve my listening skills.
First, I looked for an audio book I had interest on.
For example, well known essays or books in the best seller’s list.
Then I looked for the printed version of the audio book.
If I could find both, then I would hear the audio book while reading the paperback.
However, it wasn’t that simple. Too many times the audio book and the printed version were different.
Also, as you could not change the tape speed,
I pressed the “start”, “pause” and “rewind” buttons so many times I thought they would break.
But when I found matching audio books and their printed versions,
I would then read them and listen, over and over, to improve my listening skills.
Few months later I took the TOEFL again and scored 520 points. That allowed me to get into college.
Right before graduation, I took the TOEFL again and scored 660 points: full score!!!
12 years later, I took a TOEIC challenge from my staff and scored 990 points: full score!!!
My listening skills had definitively improved.
Last year during summer, I found Expressivo and remembered about how challenging was to improve my listening skills.
I thought: "If I just had this 14 years ago...”. Then I decided I that I really wanted to bring Expressivo to Japan.
If a computer software like Expressivo is available, all of you could read and listen to things that are interesting to you every day.
This software has a clear and beautiful voice font called “Jennifer”.
Jennifer obtained very high marks in international computer voice contests.
Moreover, you can change the reading speed, so difficult to understand words are spoken slowly.
But, if you want to challenge yourself, you could also make Jennifer speak very fast.
To finalize, what is the key to improve your listening skills?
1. Always, read and listen to things you like.
2. Every day, read and listen a small article.
Next time, I may write about how to improve reading skills.
